Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is embarking on an ambitious project to establish a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network, designed to transport passengers smoothly across its expansive complex. This underground driverless rail system will initially feature nine stations, with plans to expand to 14 as the airport’s phased development progresses. The construction of this system is slated for completion by December 2031, aligning with the anticipated opening of the airport’s first phase in 2032.
Once operational, this network is expected to be the largest automated people mover system globally, surpassing current systems at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. The airport itself is being constructed with the capacity to eventually accommodate up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. Its first phase will see the introduction of the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, which will initially boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
Beyond the internal transport network, Al Maktoum International Airport will benefit from enhanced connectivity through a planned Airport Express Link. This link aims to connect the new airport with Dubai International Airport, providing a seamless travel experience across the city. Future plans also include connections to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further integrating the airport with the region’s transportation infrastructure.
This development marks a significant step in Dubai’s ongoing efforts to bolster its position as a global aviation hub.
