The Zayed Sustainability Prize in the United Arab Emirates has set a new record with 10,233 entries from 177 countries for its 2027 awards cycle, a 32% rise compared to the previous year. This prestigious award honors projects that provide innovative solutions to global challenges in climate action, health, food, energy, water, and education through global high schools. The surge in submissions underscores a heightened global interest in addressing critical sustainability issues.
Each winner in the categories of climate, health, food, energy, and water will take home a prize of $1 million, while those reaching the finalist stage will be awarded $150,000. Additionally, six high schools that emerge victorious will receive $150,000 each, with the finalists in this category earning $25,000. This substantial financial support aims to propel impactful projects and ideas that can transform communities and drive sustainable development.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, highlights that the record-breaking participation reflects a growing global need for practical and inventive solutions to enhance quality of life. Notably, more than two-thirds of the applications originate from developing and emerging economies, with a significant focus on climate action, which garnered the highest number of entries among the categories.
The selection process will culminate in September with the announcement of the finalists, leading to the awards ceremony scheduled for January 12, 2027, where the winners will be celebrated. This event marks not only a recognition of innovative efforts but also a platform to inspire more initiatives aimed at overcoming pressing global challenges.
