The UAE Ministry of Defence has reported a tragic incident in the Strait of Hormuz where two oil tankers operated by the UAE were targeted, resulting in the death of one crew member and injuries to eight others. The tankers, named Mombasa and Al Bahyah, came under attack from two Iranian cruise missiles as they navigated the southern route of this critical maritime passage. Among the casualties was an Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa who lost his life, while four of the injured are in serious condition.
The assault on these vessels has been condemned by the UAE as a severe breach of international law, posing a threat to regional security and the safety of maritime navigation. Significant damage was inflicted on both ships as a result of the missile strikes. Following the attack, Oman’s Maritime Security Centre has reported the successful rescue of 18 crew members from the Al Bahyah, though three remain unaccounted for.
In light of this incident, India has confirmed that out of the 46 crew members aboard the two tankers, 30 are Indian nationals. The Indian government has expressed strong condemnation of the attack, extended condolences to the family of the deceased, and announced ongoing collaboration with local authorities to provide assistance to those impacted by the events.
This recent attack has exacerbated tensions within the region and prompted a rise in global oil prices, which have reached a four-week high. The security of shipping activities through the Strait of Hormuz is now a growing concern, as the waterway is a vital artery for the global oil supply.
