The state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic alliance between the two nations, which has evolved through decades of collaboration in politics, economics, energy, and culture. This partnership, initiated with the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972, has seen significant growth, particularly in trade and investment. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German companies operate within the UAE, including major corporations like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has also become a pivotal area of cooperation, with both countries working closely on renewable energy projects, climate action, decarbonization efforts, and ensuring energy security. In 2022, the UAE and Germany signed a crucial agreement to enhance energy security and boost industrial cooperation, which includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and collaboration on clean energy and climate initiatives.
The partnership extends beyond just trade and energy. Both nations have a history of collaboration in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. This relationship was formally elevated in 2004 with a strategic partnership agreement, which covers regional security, economic cooperation, and research among other areas. This agreement has helped solidify the political bonds between the two countries, ensuring a robust framework for ongoing collaboration.
