UAE and Saudi Arabia Reignite Military Support Against Houthi Forces in Yemen

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has agreed to renew its financial support for Yemeni government forces in their fight against Houthi rebels, while Saudi Arabia has committed to providing air support for the coalition opposing the Houthis. This collaboration marks a significant development amid escalating Houthi military advances and a series of attacks across the region.

The renewed cooperation between the UAE and Saudi Arabia comes at a time of strained relations between the two nations over Yemen’s political future and the role of southern separatist forces. Previously, the UAE had trained and funded southern military units, including the Giant Brigades, but had pulled back from its involvement in Yemen earlier this year. The financial and military backing from these regional powers aims to bolster the Yemeni government’s efforts to reclaim lost territories, specifically around Marib and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, although progress has been limited so far.

Saudi Arabia has been a frequent target of drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis, with key infrastructures such as airports and energy facilities being affected. Tensions have also escalated in the city of Aden, where a Houthi missile strike recently landed near the airport as a passenger plane was preparing to take off. This incident came in the wake of an attack on a presidential palace that resulted in several casualties.

As the conflict exacerbates regional security concerns, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has signaled potential defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is contemplating additional military assistance to the region. The ongoing conflict has also intensified the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, with the United Nations reporting that over 200,000 people have been displaced since August, further straining the resources of humanitarian organizations.

The rekindled alliance between the UAE and Saudi Arabia highlights the urgent need to address the escalating conflict and its far-reaching humanitarian impact. Both nations’ commitments aim to curb the Houthis’ advances, stabilizing the region and alleviating the humanitarian crisis faced by millions of Yemenis.
