The United States has introduced new tariffs on drone imports, with rates reaching as high as 100% for certain products, in a move aimed at addressing national security concerns and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. This decision affects unmanned aircraft systems, specifically targeting larger drones that weigh over 25 kilograms and those equipped with security-related features like thermal cameras and docking stations. While these products will face a 100% tariff, smaller drones will be taxed at a 25% rate.
Additionally, the US is set to impose tariffs on drones and their components from several key international partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will incur a 15% tariff, while those from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, contingent on the condition that the hardware, software, and technology are sourced from the aforementioned countries or the US. The majority of these new tariffs are scheduled to be implemented on September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial sectors by encouraging domestic drone production and job creation, thereby reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. Currently, China holds a significant position in the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI capturing a substantial share of the US commercial drone market. DJI has previously been subject to US restrictions due to concerns over national security.
US officials have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could pose security risks, such as unauthorized surveillance, data collection, and potential attacks. The Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. This initiative comes amid ongoing trade and technology disputes between the US and China. In response, China has implemented its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and has taken actions against several American firms.
