Oil Surges as Trump Doubles Down on His Nuclear-First Doctrine Against Iran

Oil prices surged Thursday as President Trump doubled down on his nuclear-first doctrine against Iran, making clear that the energy crisis gripping global markets will not deflect the United States from its mission to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that halting Iran’s nuclear program is “far greater” in importance than the oil price shock, calling Iran an “evil Empire” and pledging unconditional commitment to nuclear containment. The IEA simultaneously declared the supply disruption the worst in recorded market history.

Gulf producers have cut output by approximately 10 million barrels per day — roughly 10% of global demand. Brent crude gained as much as 10% Thursday to briefly exceed $100 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate climbed toward $96 before retreating. The IEA coordinated the release of 400 million barrels from members’ emergency reserves. The US pledged 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Trump’s Truth Social post acknowledged the financial dimension: America profits from high oil as the world’s largest producer. He then doubled down on his nuclear-first doctrine: stopping Iran from developing weapons of mass destruction is his “far greater” presidential priority. Iran is an evil empire, he wrote, and it will not be permitted to threaten the Middle East and the world with nuclear weapons.

Doubling down on the nuclear-first doctrine sends a clear message to all parties. For markets, it means the supply disruption will persist until the nuclear mission is completed. For Iran, it means US military pressure will not relent. For allies, it means supporting a conflict defined by nuclear security imperatives rather than energy economics. Trump reinforced the doctrine on Wednesday, confirming ongoing operations of historical intensity.

Trump expressed no concern about Iranian retaliation on American soil. The oil market crisis is historic and shows no signs of resolving. Trump’s nuclear-first doctrine — now doubled down upon — will define the US approach to the conflict for the foreseeable future.
