Blood Flow and Fat Processing: A Doctor’s 7 Keys to Liver Health

A gastroenterologist has shared seven key foods that support liver health by focusing on two critical functions: promoting healthy blood flow and improving fat processing. These foods are natural ways to strengthen this vital organ.

For blood flow, the expert recommends watermelon with lime and beetroot. Watermelon’s citrulline and lime’s vitamin C support nitric oxide production. Beetroot is also “loaded with nitrates” which support the same nitric oxide pathways, ensuring the liver is well-supplied with blood.

For fat processing, the doctor again points to beetroot. Beyond its nitrates, it contains betaine, a “nutrient that helps the liver process and move fat out of liver cells.” Raspberries also aid this process, as their fiber and anthocyanins help the body manage fats and sugars after meals.

The list includes other essential foods. Cranberries are crucial for the gut-liver axis, as their prebiotic polyphenols feed healthy gut bacteria. Pomegranates are rich in their own polyphenols, which are suggested to calm inflammatory signals.

Apples with cinnamon are also recommended for their role in supporting insulin sensitivity and healthy lipid levels. Finally, strawberries with dark chocolate (70%+) are included for their flavanols, which boost blood vessel function and cardiometabolic health.
