One of the most common casualties of a poorly planned trip is a pet’s digestive system. The combination of stress, motion, and dietary changes can easily lead to an upset stomach. Being a gastrointestinal guardian is key to a comfortable journey.
Consistency is your best friend. The number one rule for happy tummies on the road is to stick to their regular food. Do not introduce new treats or let them sample your food. Pack their usual kibble or wet food in pre-portioned bags. Also, if possible, bring a large bottle of water from your home tap, as sudden changes in drinking water can also cause digestive issues.
Manage motion sickness proactively. If you know your pet is prone to motion sickness, talk to your vet before the trip. They can prescribe effective anti-nausea medication. For milder cases, feeding a very light meal a few hours before travel and ensuring good ventilation in the car can make a big difference.
Stress-induced stomach trouble. Stress itself can cause diarrhea or vomiting. All the other travel tips—exercising before the trip, making the carrier comfortable, staying calm yourself—are also part of your digestive health toolkit. A calm pet is more likely to have a calm stomach.
