Google is set to alter the way Android device backups are handled by incorporating them into the 15GB of free cloud storage provided with every Google Account. Presently, backups of SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app data do not count against this storage limit, which is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. However, with this upcoming update, these backups will begin to contribute to the overall storage capacity.
This shift in policy is anticipated to come into effect in the coming weeks. According to Google, the typical Android backup will consume approximately 40MB of storage space. As a result, those who are nearing or have reached their storage limit might have to consider freeing up space or opting for a Google One subscription to accommodate their data needs. Automatic backups on devices will pause if the account’s storage runs out, resuming only when additional space becomes available.
In addition to the storage policy change, Google is working on developing more detailed backup controls. These new controls will give users the ability to select which apps and specific types of data they want to back up. This added layer of flexibility is intended to help users manage their backup sizes more effectively, while also granting them greater command over their cloud storage management.
